It’s the start of a new year Monday for Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls and boys golf. The Golden Hawk girls found tremendous success a season ago. The Hawks finished 40-12 overall, winning the regular season River Valley Conference title. Mid-Prairie captured the RVC Tournament title in May at Muscatine, placing all six varsity players on All-Conference teams. The postseason was even better. The Golden Hawks were Regional Opener Champions at home in Kalona with school record scores of 176 on the front nine and 374 for 18 as a team, only to move on to Williamsburg and the Regional final, winning the team title there with a new school record of 367 on 18 holes, to clinch a bid to state, the first back-to-back appearances for the program since 2009-2010. At state, the Golden Hawks finished seventh in the 2A field with a 751 across the two day event. Alexa Huber and Kylie Reinier were named Academic All-State, Reinier and Gabi Robertson were named All-Region and head coach Tracy McArtor was named Region 4 Coach of the Year. While Reinier and Huber with their 50 and 52 per nine and 94 and 104 per 18 hole averages respectively have graduated, the Hawks return a ton of firepower. Leaders returning include Robertson with her team leading 46 card per nine holes. Madi Davidson is back as the 18 hole leader from a year ago with a 95 average. Robertson’s 98 and Addison English’s 99 also break the century mark of those returning, and Elliot Debler, who logged eight starts a year ago for the Golden Hawk varsity returns. The Hawks meet Iowa City Regina Monday, who they beat 198-261 in a River Valley Conference dual at Pleasant Valley, last season, led by Robertson’s round of 45.
The Golden Hawk boys were 23-19 last year. The Hawks were 14th at the RVC Championships in Muscatine, led by Drew Schlabaugh’s 88 to earn an Honorable Mention RVC position. Mid-Prairie wrapped up the postseason with a fifth place finish at the 2A Sectional Meet in Kalona, shooting a 352, led by Warren Scarff’s 85 individually. Mid-Prairie graduated five seniors last year, Scarff, along with Alex Bean, Aiden Bush, Shawn Dodds and Ben Mattes. The Golden Hawks do return Bryce Henry who led the team per nine holes with a 48 average and their 18-hole leader, Schlabaugh with an 85 per round his junior season. The boys also open with Regina tonight. The Hawks fell to the Regals 167-214 to open the previous year, despite Henry’s medalist round of 38.
The boys in Iowa City at Brown Deer Golf Course and the girls at the Kalona Golf Course, both get things underway tonight at 4p.m.
