The Washington Demon boys began their new soccer season with a 5-0 victory over the Highland Huskies yesterday at Washington Wellness Park. Washington struck first in the 13th minute when midfielder Angel Mata floated a perfect cross to the far post and right on the dome of fellow senior Manny Raymundo, who knocked in the header for the first goal of the season.
Raymundo struck again two minutes later on a loose ball in the box, and the Demons were off and running from there. Washington led 3-0 by halftime and never looked back on their way to a season-opening win.
The Demon girls were not as fortunate in their first match of 2024, losing a 1-0 thriller at Williamsburg. Despite their best efforts, Washington could not keep the hometown Raiders from finding a way to net the winning tally in the second half.
While the Demon ladies will be back on the pitch Monday at Oskaloosa, the Washington boys will wait until Tuesday to next play when they face Hillcrest Academy.
