Local soccer teams were able to get the new season underway this last week. Sigourney-Keota was able to bounce back from a 3-0 loss to Prairie City-Monroe in Tuesday’s opener by defeating Wapello Thursday 3-2. SK built a 3-0 lead and was able to fend off the Indians in the second half to hold on for their first win of the season.

The Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union girls also responded to a season-opening loss by knocking off Wapello Thursday 4-0, with two goals in each half. Senior Lecet Quiroz and freshman Iris Garza had one goal and one assist each for the Wildcats, while senior Abby Acosta and sophomore Yaileen Miranda also each scored to help Columbus/WMU get to 1-1.

WACO was able to find the back of the net in the first half Thursday thanks to junior Keiran Luitjens, who scored off a feed from sophomore Tristan Luitjens for a goal that would have the match level at halftime.

But the Warriors couldn’t keep Fairfield in check, giving up a pair of tallies to Trojans senior Jaxen Allen alone and losing their opener 4-1. While Sigourney-Keota will next play Tuesday against Highland and Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union also returns to the pitch tomorrow against Tipton, WACO is off until they face Hillcrest Academy Thursday.
