Both the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks and Sigourney Savages got strong showings from their boys’ track and field teams Thursday at the Ike Ryan Relays in Eddyville. Mid-Prairie was third in team scoring in the Class A division, while Sigourney also finished third as a team in Class B.
The Golden Hawks were led by four winners. Junior Jayse Yoder was the Class A champion in the 800-meter run with a time of two minutes one second, while senior Landon Sullivan took the title in the long jump with a top leap of 20 feet three-and-a-half inches.
Burke Berry won the shot put for Mid-Prairie with a top toss of 50 feet 8 1/2 inches and was second in the discus. Fellow junior Emmett Swartzentruber was the Class A champ of the 3,200 meters, clocking in at just under 10 minutes nine seconds, and he would also end up fifth in the 800.
Junior Preston Yutzy was a runner-up for the Golden Hawks in the mile and took third in the 1,600, while sophomore Kaden Kos was third in the discus and junior Landry Gingerich was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles.
Freshman Max Swartzentruber was fifth in the mile for the Hawks, who were also second in the distance medley relay; fourth in the 4-by-400-meters; and fifth in the 4-by-100, 4-by-200 and shuttle hurdles.
Sigourney’s stellar day only included one winner, as Troy Klett was the Class B champion of the 3,200 in 11:02, but the sophomore also won silver medals in the half-mile and the 400.
Junior Caden Clarahan was also a runner-up for the Savages in the shot put and the 110 hurdles. Junior Issac Bruns earned a bronze medal in the 200, followed by sophomore teammate Colt Reed in fourth.
Sigourney sophomore Brayden Wood finished fourth in the 800, while junior Ashton Schwab was tied for fifth in the discus and freshman Carson O’Rourke was fifth in both the 400 hurdles and the long jump.
The Savages would go on to finish third in the 4-by-100; fourth in the sprint medley; fifth in the 4-by-400; and second in both the distance medley and the shuttle hurdles.
