The Washington Demons got back to their winning ways in boys’ soccer yesterday by defeating conference rival Burlington 4-2 at home. Washington seized the initial lead in the ninth minute when Brayan Arreola used his head to knock in a perfect throw-in from fellow senior Isaac Gentry.
The Demons would double the advantage heading into halftime after Ben Kronlage scored on a feed from fellow sophomore Edwin Cortes in the 23rd minute. Burlington would respond early in the second half, scoring a pair of goals only about a minute apart, but Washington bounced back.
Arreola found the back of the net again in the 58th minute on a find from senior Bill De La Rosa to recapture the lead, and junior Lucky Lindsey put the finishing touches on the win by scoring in the 72nd minute after an assist by senior Angel Mata. After back-to-back defeats coming in, the Demons now improve to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Southeast Conference.
The Washington girls were not as fortunate, falling behind by three goals on the road yesterday and ultimately falling 4-0 to Burlington. The Demons drop to 1-4 in conference play and 2-6 overall. Both Washington teams return to the pitch Thursday against Mount Pleasant.
