Following the resignation of City Attorney, Bill Sueppel, the City of Kalona has begun the process of hiring a replacement. The council learned of Sueppel’s resignation, which is effective May 1, at their latest meeting. The firm Meardon, Sueppel & Downer, for which Sueppel has worked, is disbanding.

City Administrator, Ryan Schlabaugh, explained to the council the different ways that Kalona could fill the role. “The two options are to go out with a [Request for Quote] and we get probably a dozen solicitations that we’ll have to vet through and go through or staff does it. We work with the finance committee. We come back with a recommendation of bringing an attorney here that we would like to partner with.”

The council decided that the city staff should work to narrow down the field of candidates. The tentative plan is to present potential replacements during one of the May meetings.
