Both Washington Demon soccer teams knocked off Fairfield last night. That included the Washington boys celebrating Senior Night with a 2-1 victory over Fairfield at Washington Wellness Park.

Sophomore Edwin Cortes took the feed from one of those Demon seniors in midfielder Angel Mata and buried his sixth goal of the season to give Washington the initial lead in the 19th minute.

Junior Lucas Lindsey came away with his fourth goal of the spring four minutes later to create the margin that the Demons would carry into halftime. From there, the Washington defense clamped down, only allowing Fairfield to score in the final 10 minutes but never draw even.

Freshman goalkeeper Braedon Tappan finished with eight saves as the Demons win their second match in three days and their fourth straight overall to improve to 5-1 in the Southeast Conference and 8-2 overall.

The Washington girls got in front on the road when a Fairfield handball in the box allowed junior Ana Mata to step up and bury a penalty kick. Giselle Marcelino added another to double the Demon lead heading into halftime, and fellow senior Audrey Anderson scored in the late stages to finish off a 3-0 victory. Washington raises its record to 2-5 in conference play and 3-7 overall.

The WACO boys were not as fortunate last night at home, falling behind 2-0 against Central Lee. Senior Colton Leichty would score after switching from his normal position of keeper, but it would not be enough as the Hawks struck again and went on to win 3-1.

WACO falls to 3-4 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 4-5 overall. The Warriors will next play Thursday against Danville, while both Washington teams are also off until Thursday when they face another conference rival in Fort Madison.
