Both Washington Demon soccer teams took down Keokuk yesterday. Despite winning 10-1 at home, the Washington boys actually fell behind initially, allowing a Keokuk goal in the 14th minute.

But the Demons had an immediate answer, as sophomore Edwin Cortes scored on a great through-ball from senior Isaac Gentry in the 18th minute to tie things up, then a handball in the goal box on the Chiefs allowed Gentry to step up and bury a penalty kick just a few seconds later.

Washington would be off and running from there. Manny Raymundo and Bill De La Rosa both found the back of the net before halftime to stretch the lead to 4-1, then fellow senior Brayan Arreola scored in the first two minutes and last 10 minutes of the second half.

Raymundo and Cortes also each scored their second goals of the game, while senior Angel Mata also put one between the posts and senior Randy Huertero buried another penalty kick to round out the scoring for the Demons.

Washington wins its fifth straight match to improve to 7-1 in the Southeast Conference and 9-2 overall. The Demons will try to stay atop the conference standings when they next play tomorrow at Fort Madison.

The Washington girls made a 70-minute trip to Fort Madison worth it last night with a 3-0 victory over Keokuk. Junior Maya Murphy got the Demons on the board after an assist from senior Audrey Anderson, then sophomore Angie Anderson doubled the advantage going into the halftime break.

Audrey Anderson put the finishing touches on things in the second half after a feed from sophomore Jocelyn Carter. The win moves Washington’s overall record to 4-7, including a 3-5 mark in conference play. The Demon girls will also have their next game against Fort Madison tomorrow afternoon at Washington Wellness Park.
