The high school golf postseason continues today with Class 1A boys’ sectional tournaments taking place across the state. That includes the WACO Warriors and Winfield-Mount Union Wolves playing in an 18-hole tournament in New London; the Sigourney Savages playing at North Cedar; and the Columbus Wildcats, Lone Tree Lions and Keota Eagles all heading to Central City.

Winfield-Mount Union will be looking to add to an excellent season that featured winning one tournament and five conference duals, as well as finishing fourth at the Southeast Iowa Super Conference Tournament.

In particular, WMU’s Carter Loyd has been brilliant, winning five events this season while posting an averaging 18-hole score of 86-and-a-half strokes. However, the Wolves have gotten average scoring on 18 holes in the 90s from nearly their whole team, including junior Sinjin Brown; freshmen Justin Knipfer and Cody Milks; and sophomores Max Edwards, Konner Kinneberg and Grant Anderson.

Sigourney has also put together a strong season, winning three events and finishing third or better as a team three other times, including a victory at the South Iowa Cedar League Tournament.

Sophomore Solon Yates has three individual wins this spring and is the Savages’ lowest-scoring player, including an 18-hole average of just over 79. Sigourney has also gotten 18-hole scoring on average in the mid 90s or lower from senior Brock Alderson, sophomore Josh Wyatt, freshman Ike Molyneux and juniors Issac Bruns and Cain Weber.

Few teams have been as dominant as Keota, with three wins and only one finish worse than third as a team in seven events. The entire core of Eagles is shooting 93 or lower per 18 holes in 2024, including freshman Brennan McGuire, junior Billie Kindred and seniors Sawyer Stout, Cole Kindred, Tanner Waterhouse and Conner Strand.

Senior Cael Phillips has been Columbus’ top scorer in 18-hole tournaments with an even average of 100-and-a-half strokes, but sophomore Kason Dopler and junior Ryan Coil have both gone under the century mark for low rounds for the Wildcats this season.

WACO has been led in scoring by freshman Malachi Rinner and senior Noah Fried, including Fried’s low 18-hole round of 108 for the Warriors. Senior Dominic Graap and sophomore Cade Willoz have been the low men for Lone Tree, including the Lions’ best round of 99 from Graap. All sectional golf tournaments today will tee off at 10 a.m.
