The Washington Demons continued their marvelous boys’ golf season by seizing a second consecutive Class 3A sectional championship yesterday at Mount Pleasant Golf & Country Club. Washington posted a combined team score of 302 strokes, 17 less than second-place Albia.
The Demons were once again led by Roman Roth, who kept his chase of back-to-back state titles alive by shooting a three-under-par round of 69 that included seven birdies and four bogeys and winning his seventh event of his senior season.
Washington’s Rajan Roth was tied for the tournament runner-up honors with a one-under 71, collecting two birdies and one bogey on a day where he played a bogey-free front nine holes. Fellow sophomore Drew Conrad had three birdies and six bogeys on his way to a five-over 77 and a fifth-place finish overall.
Teague Mayer fired an 85 for the Demons, with fellow senior Luke Beenblossom only one stroke behind him and sophomore teammate Carson Brown adding an 88. After the tournament, Washington head coach Collin Stark told KCII Sports that his players’ success is a product of having each other to compete with on a daily basis.
“At times,” Stark said, “you get the most improved by having guys around you that will push you. A lot of guys on our team have a good nucleus of players that enjoy playing well, playing with each other and challenging each other to be better, and it bodes well [for us] when we get out on the course.”
The Demons win their ninth out of 12 events played this season and will now move on to the Class 3A district tournament Monday at Stone Creek Golf Club in Williamsburg. Last season, Washington fell just four strokes shy of their first trip to state as a team since 2011, when they finished second in Class 3A.
