It will be hard to find a busier city than Kalona on May 11. While the first Market kicks off on Saturday, it is just one of several activities within the community.

The Kalona Rotary gets things started with their annual omelet breakfast at the Kalona Methodist Church. The breakfast begins at 6:45 a.m. and runs until 10:30 a.m. Early morning in Kalona will also see a unique event in the Iowa Gravel Series. Tonia Poole, Director for the Kalona Chamber of Commerce, explains. “The Iowa Gravel Series is a gravel bike race that typically favors the north half of Iowa. Kalona is a new stop this year kicking off their series for the summer.” The 100K race sets off into the Kalona countryside at 7:30 a.m., while the 50K race starts at 8.

Late morning into the afternoon offers more opportunities for fun with the first Kalona Market of the season. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on 5th Street and C Avenue, there will be dozens of vendors, and Kalona Chocolates will have a free Mother’s Day craft for kids. Banjoy will perform live music, with food vendors available as well. If that wasn’t enough, Saturday is the second day of Kalona’s citywide garage sales. Maps for the sales are located at The News.
