A pair of local boys’ soccer teams had their seasons come to an end Monday in the first round of the Class 1A Substate 6 playoffs. The WACO Warriors suffered a 3-1 defeat at Central Lee, while the Columbus Wildcats fell to Danville by the same score.

The Warriors fell into a 2-0 hole by halftime, and despite a second-half goal from senior Colton Leichty, they would not be able to rally. Meanwhile, senior Fernando Erazo got the Wildcats on the board in the first half, but they would be down two goals by the break and could not come back.

Columbus ends the season with a record of 3-9, while WACO finishes up with a mark of 5-8. While the Warriors will be losing three seniors in Leichty, Reece Oswald and John Stauffer to graduation, the Wildcats will also say goodbye to a trio of seniors in Erazo, Josh Almanza and Ian Estudillo.

Meanwhile, the Highland Huskies will get to start the postseason at home Tuesday when they face Marquette Catholic in Substate 5. Highland’s record is 5-9, but they’ve won as many matches this year as they had in the previous five seasons combined.

Jared Diaz has been a star for the Huskies with team highs of 12 goals and four assists, while fellow junior Logan McFarland has scored nine times. Highland will be meeting a Marquette Catholic side that is 4-4. Kickoff from Riverside is set for Tuesday night at 7.
