Ever since falling just four strokes shy of reaching the state tournament as a team one year ago, the Washington Demon boys’ golf club has been waiting for their chance to change the story in a sequel. That opportunity comes today as Washington plays in a Class 3A district tournament at Stone Creek Golf Club in Williamsburg.

It’s been a spectacular 2024 campaign to this point for the Demons, who earned their ninth team victory in 12 events this season when they made it back-to-back sectional championships last week in Mount Pleasant and won every Southeast Conference event of the spring.

Leading the way has been Roman Roth, the defending Class 3A champion who is looking for a third consecutive trip to state. Winning sectionals Wednesday made it seven victories for the senior, who has averaged an 18-hole score of 71 strokes and finished at or under par 10 times this spring, including going as low as 67.

Sophomores Rajan Roth and Drew Conrad have been nearly as excellent, averaging 74 and 77 strokes for 18-hole events, respectively. Sophomore Carson Brown and seniors Luke Beenblossom and Teague Mayer all have 18-hole averages of 88 or lower.

Washington needs to finish top two to move on as a team, which would be their first trip to state as a team since 2011. The Demons tee off at the Class 3A district tournament in Williamsburg at 10 a.m.
