The Washington Demons closed out the girls’ soccer regular season on a roll, winning back-to-back games at the end of the week that included a 3-2 victory over the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks Thursday in Wellman.
While Audrey Anderson got Washington on the board in the first half after a goal assisted by fellow senior Giselle Marcelino, Mid-Prairie would be the team with the halftime lead thanks to juniors Lydia Beachy and Emily Curtiss each scoring in the opening 25 minutes.
But the Demons would lock down the Golden Hawks from there, as junior Kate Flannery came in at goalkeeper and posted a shutout over the final 55 minutes. Washington would tie the match at 2 in the second half when senior Stephanie Aguilar buried a penalty kick after a Mid-Prairie hand-ball in the goal box.
Sophomore Angelique Murillo Hernandez would prove to be the unlikely hero in the late stages, scoring her first career goal to give the Demons a lead they would never relinquish.
Freshman keeper Ruth Whitthoft gave the Golden Hawks a heroic effort with a whopping 22 saves in goal, but it would not be enough to keep Mid-Prairie from falling to 7-8. Flannery had three saves off the bench for Washington.
The Demons followed up a thrilling win with a convincing 8-0 victory over conference rival Keokuk the following night, leading by five goals before the halftime break. Both Audrey and Angeline Anderson had hat tricks, while Augilar and freshman Ashley Ramirez each knocked in penalty kicks.
Angeline Anderson added to her hat trick with a pair of assists, while Washington junior Jasmin Pascual-Gonzalez also had an assist as Washington finishes Southeast Conference play with a 4-6 record.
Despite just a 6-8 overall mark, the Demons pick up their fourth win in the last five matches. The timing for such momentum couldn’t be better, as Washington will start the postseason Monday by hosting Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union in the first round of the Class 1A Region 8 playoffs.
