If two is good, three must be better! The No. 7 in Class 2A Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls golf team added another first to their resume of impressive numbers and school records Wednesday at the Class 2A Regional Finals in West Liberty, qualifying for State for the third straight season, a first for the program. The Hawks did it by finishing second overall in the team race with their combined score of 386, beating conference rival and third place Tipton’s 391, and also gaining a measure of revenge on the Tigers, after Tipton handed Mid-Prairie a loss in Kalona in the opening round of the playoffs last week. The Oelwein Huskies were Regional Final champs with a team score 350.

The Golden Hawks were led by Madi Davidson’s day of 89, which included a front nine 43, for sixth overall. Other Mid-Prairie cards included Gabi Robertson’s 94, Morgyn Bender 101, Olivia Swartzentruber 102, Elliot Debler 103 and Addison English 104. After the meet, the happy group of Hawks joined KCII Sports to talk about the tournament, how they found out the final results and how it feels to make school history.

Davidson said, “I thought the group did really well. I came back and saw our scores and thought ‘Oh my goodness, we’re going to do it!’ I was very nervous, then we found out that last score for Tipton and it was awesome. It’s always a good feeling!”

Swartzentruber continued, “I saw the scores and was like ‘this good’. When we found out that last score for Tipton you could breathe again. I remember when I was in middle school and I was so amazing by how good the high school golfers were, and not to be a part of that is just crazy!”

Robertson said, “I asked Tracy (head coach Tracy McArtor) how we were doing because I was one of the first people to post a score so I didn’t know. He said we shot a 186 on the front and were still beating Tipton, and I thought ‘okay good, then we got this!’ (Being the first to go three straight years in program history) is awesome because there’s been so many people before us who have tried doing it and never got it done. It’s so cool that we’re the team to do it. We just keep breaking records it seems like and that should be our legacy.”

English added, “When we come back to our school and see all of our stuff posted in the hallways, knowing that we broke all of the records and that we went three years in a row, that will be good to see.”

With the runner-up finish, Mid-Prairie is now 48-6 on the year and qualifies for the 2A State Tournament to be played in Boone. The Hawks finished at seventh State in Marshalltown in 2023 with a two-day overall score of 751, led by Kylie Reinier’s 181 in 19th place. Action starts Thursday at Cedar Pointe Golf Course.
