One of the best seasons in Washington Demon boys’ soccer history came to a close last night when Washington fell 4-0 to Cedar Rapids Xavier in the Class 3A Substate 2 finals.

Fifth-ranked Xavier struck first with a goal in the 30th minute and would double that lead just before halftime. The Saints added on twice in the final 10 minutes to secure victory.

Senior Manny Raymundo led Washington with seven total shot attempts, including three shots on goal, while freshman goalkeeper Braedon Tappan had 10 saves. After the match, Demons head coach Sally Hart told KCII Sports that her team gave their all and has much to be proud of.

“We played our game,” Hart said. “We really held our defensive formation as much as we could. We just couldn’t find the back of the net tonight, and you can’t win if you don’t score. This team leaves quite a legacy, and it’s tough.”

The season concludes for Washington with a record of 11-4, their second-most wins in a single season in program history. The Demons will now say goodbye to an accomplished senior class that won 41 games over their four years and includes Raymundo, Angel Mata, Lane Schrock, Randy Huertero, Brayan Arreola, Fernando Ortega, Bill De La Rosa, Isaac Gentry, Andrew Starr and Omar Roman.
