Girls on the Run Eastern Iowa was recently awarded a Washington County Riverboat Foundation grant in the amount of $7,500. The announcement was made at the Foundation’s meeting May 15.

Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization serving 10 eastern Iowa counties including Washington, Iowa, Johnson, Henry, and Jefferson. Using physical activity to enhance social, emotional, and physical skills, their mission is to “inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident.”

Heather Young, Executive Director for Girls On The Run, shared with KCII where the Riverboat Foundation funds will be going. “[At] our culminating 5K, every girl has a running buddy or family member that joins them on the run. This allows us to actually reimburse all of the running buddies’ and families’ registration for the 5K. So it has provided equity on an enormous level for all of our participants.” This year’s 5K was held on May 18.
