The Columbus Wildcats came up with a 15-3 win in softball over the WACO Warriors in three innings Tuesday night in Columbus Junction. Seven runs in the first inning and six in the second would be more than enough for Columbus to cruise to victory.
Sophomore Kennedy Woepking led the Wildcats with two hits and four runs batted in, while sophomore Jessica Del Rio also had two hits and two RBI. Freshman Ellie Sanders stroked a double on her way to three runs scored and two driven in, while sophomore Daniela Diaz came up with three RBI despite not having a hit.
Sanders got the pitching victory for Columbus by giving up just one earned run on four hits and two walks and striking out three in three innings. Freshman Natalie Wagler had two of those hits to lead the WACO lineup and finished with a run scored and one RBI.
Drew Graber also came up with a hit, a run and an RBI for the Warriors, while fellow freshman Carlee Lunsford had one knock and scored once. WACO falls to 0-2 to begin the season, while Columbus is now 2-0 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 2-3 overall.
The Wildcats look to remain perfect in conference play when they travel to Louisa-Muscatine tonight. The Warriors are also back in action this evening, hosting Winfield-Mount Union.
