A busy week for Mid-Prairie baseball and softball wraps up tonight with contests for each squad. The Golden Hawk baseball team travels to West Branch tonight. The Hawks are 3-0 on the week, 5-0 in conference and 7-1 overall after a 5-3 win over Tipton Thursday in Wellman, sweeping the season series from the Tigers. Tatem Telfer led the Hawks at the plate with three hits and two RBI, Brock Harland got the pitching win and Brooks Weber the save. The Golden Hawks come into the night ranked No. 5 in Class 2A in the latest poll from the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. They are hitting .332 as a team with a .496OBP and .442 slug with 75 runs scored on 66 hits, 53 walks and 41 strikeouts. Individually, Luke Traetow and Tatem Telfer are both at .462 on the year to lead the way. Telfer has a team best 12 total hits and 14 driven in. He, Brady Weber, Bowen Burmeister and Blake Swart have scored a team best nine times. As a staff, the Hawks have a 1.54 ERA with a .164 opponent average, giving up 30 hits, 34 walks and striking out 72. Brady Weber has a team best 0.54 ERA in 13 innings and Telfer’s 28 strikeouts are best. Telfer and Brock Harland each have two wins.

West Branch is 0-3 overall and in conference. They have been off for eight days, since a 12-5 loss to West Liberty. This season the Bears are hitting .155 collectively with a .341 on base and .225 slug with nine runs scored, 11 total hits, 18 walks and 18 strikeouts. Individual leaders are Cale Saydel with a .333 average on a team best three hits with two runs scored. Max Lodge and Ian Nelson have each driven in three. On the mound, the Bears have a 6.26 team ERA with a .168 opponent average, giving up 17 hits, 19 walks and striking out 19. Nolan Staker has a 3.23 ERA to lead the team and Drew Wilcox has struck out nine. Mid-Prairie swept a doubleheader from the Bears in Wellman last week by 4-3 and 7-1 scores and have won 30 of the last 40 in the series including five straight.

The Mid-Prairie softball team looks for a bounce-back tonight as they step outside of conference to host Burlington. The Hawks are 3-2 on the year, 2-2 in conference play after a 5-0 shut out setback at Wilton Thursday, where they were handcuffed by Ali Walker. The Hawks had three hits on the night with Dakota Mitchell, Brenna Jehle and Kadence Grout each coming up with a single. Grout went all six in the circle in the loss. On the season, the Hawks are hitting .474 as a group with a .630 on base percentage and .722 slug with 61 runs on 46 hits, 27 walks and only 14 strikeouts. Gabi Robertson, Kadence Grout, Sophie Miller, Brenna Jehle and Dakota Mitchell are all hitting .500 or better. Grout’s eight RBI and seven hits are best on the team while Miller and Mitchell have each scored a team best nine times. In the circle, Grout is 3-2 in 24 innings with a four ERA, 15 strikeouts and four walks.

Burlington is out to a 3-0 start on the season, sweeping  a trio of games from the Keokuk Chiefs over the last week by a combined 12-0 score. The Grayhounds are hitting .271 as a team with a .375 on base percentage and .354 slug to go with 12 runs, 13 hits, seven walks and eight strikeouts. Individually, Kylee Hill is at .500 with three hits, and three RBI. Mady Taeger has scored three times. In the circle, Hill and Saydee Plummer have given up just one hit through three games, no runs, six walks and struck out 32 batters. This is the first all-time meeting between the two schools.
