The Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus Wolves picked up their first victory of the baseball season Friday night by rolling past Louisa-Muscatine 10-0.

Already leading 2-0 after two innings, WMU/Columbus used a five-run fourth to seize control and scored three more runs in the fifth to end the game early and end their 0-3 start to the summer.

Sophomores Tyson Kaalberg and Nicolas Sparrow led the Wolves’ lineup with two hits, two runs scored and one run batted in each. Senior Cael Phillips scored twice and also had an RBI, while senior Cole Milks and sophomore Kason Dopler came up with a hit, a run and one driven in each.

Sophomore Trevor Philips scored once and picked up an RBI, while Riley Kaalberg had a hit and a run scored. The junior was also the winning pitcher for Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus, throwing all five innings and allowing only one hit. Kaalberg yielded four walks but racked up seven strikeouts.

WMU softball would not have the same good fortune, falling 13-0 to 13th-ranked Louisa-Muscatine. The loss drops the Wolves to 2-2, with all four games coming inside the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.

Both packs of Wolves will be back on the diamond tonight when they take on a Super Conference South squad in Central Lee.
