Two top six baseball teams in their respective classes took the diamond Tuesday at Paul N. Bailey Field in Wellman when the No. 5 in Class 2A Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks hosted the No. 6 in Class 3A Solon Spartans for a non-conference contest. The Spartans left town with a 4-0 win. Things were scoreless through the first two frames with Mid-Prairie pitcher Brock Harland and Solon hurler Jackson Link settling in. The Spartans got to Harland in the third when the first two of the frame reached ahead of Baylor commit Brett White, who launched a three run homer to right to get Solon on the board first. The Spartans added an insurance run in the fifth on a Golden Hawk error. The Hawks mounted scoring threats in the fifth and sixth, putting multiple runners on, but were unable to break through.

The Spartans out hit the Hawks 7-3 in the contest, led by White with two hits and three driven in with the home run. Mid-Prairie got a single each from Tatem Telfer, Dylan Henry and Luke Traetow. Link threw a gem at the Hawks from the hill, finishing the complete game shut out, scattering those three hits, and striking out six with just one walk. Harland took the loss for Mid-Prairie, going four and a third, surrendering seven hits, four runs, three earned, striking out three and walking a pair. Carson Pence was tremendous out of the ‘pen for Mid-Prairie, working two and two thirds, shutting out Solon on just one hit, two walks and striking out two. After the contest, Golden Hawk head coach Kyle Mullet joined the KCII Postgame Show to talk about his takeaways.

Mullet said, “We want to play the best programs around. These two programs have a lot of history. I’m very happy with the way our guys competed. You can come out against a good baseball team like this and not throw strikes or play good defense and lose 10-0. We need to keep working hard. Get stronger. Get in the batting cage and turn our ground balls and fly balls into hits. That’s the focus right now.”

With the loss, the Hawks see their six game winning streak come to an end as they fall to 10-2 on the year with a trip to Wilton Thursday. Solon is now 11-3.
