The Sigourney Savages suffered a rare hiccup on the softball diamond Saturday, falling to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 6-0. Already down 1-0 an inning in, Sigourney yielded four runs to Eddyville in the second, and the Savages could not do any scoring to reel the Rockets back in. Sigourney, ranked second in the state in Class 1A, drops to 9-4 with the defeat.

The Savages will be looking for a bounce-back when they return to action tonight, but they’ll also be looking remain in first place in the South Iowa Cedar League when they take on a HLV team that has also only lost once in conference play so far this season.

The Lone Tree Lions also suffered a pair of softball losses to end the week, starting with a 6-3 defeat Friday at Wapello. Three runs in the third inning gave Lone Tree a brief lead on the defending champions of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North.

But Wapello scored in the bottom of the third to tie things up, and three runs in the sixth put the Arrows in front for good. Freshman Addison McCullough and juniors Rylee Shield and Haley Bockelman each had one hit and one run scored in the defeat.

Lone Tree would respond by winning the first of their two Saturday games 7-5 over Grand View Christian. The Lions tied the game at two in the third and used five runs in the fourth to go in front, holding on to the lead down the stretch despite a near rally by the Thunder.

Unfortunately, Lone Tree would not have the same good luck against HLV. An initial 1-0 lead went away after the Warriors scored twice in the third, and after each team scored once in the fifth, the Lions tied the game at three in the sixth. But HLV would walk it off in the seventh to earn the 4-3 victory.

After a 5-0 start to the season, Lone Tree is now 6-3, including a 3-2 record in the Super Conference North. The Lions will be back in action tonight facing Holy Trinity Catholic.
