The Columbus Wildcats toppled New London softball last night 9-6 on the road. After trailing 2-0 through the first three innings, Columbus scored three times in the fourth to go in front, then added another six runs in the fifth to build a lead that would hold up the rest of the way.

Lily Coil made her presence felt for the Wildcats with three hits in as many at-bats, including a triple, as well as two runs scored, one run batted in and three stolen bases. Fellow junior Aracely Garza also had a three-hit, three-steals game and two RBI, while freshman Iris Garza scored once and drove in a run on her two hits.

Sophomore Kennedy Woepking was the starting pitcher and went three innings, allowing two runs on three hits and picking up five strikeouts. Coil pitched the middle three frames and allowed a single walk while striking out four as Columbus improves to 3-12 with the win.

The Lone Tree Lions would not have the same happy fate, suffering a 4-0 defeat last night at Holy Trinity Catholic. The game was scoreless after three-and-a-half innings and just a one-run contest going into the sixth, but that’s where Holy Trinity scored three more runs to take control.

The loss drops Lone Tree to 6-4. The Lions will look to bounce back from the defeat when they host Highland tonight. Meanwhile, Columbus faces Hillcrest Academy this evening.
