It’s a road trip Tuesday for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team when they travel to Mount Vernon to meet the state ranked Mustangs. The Hawks come into the contest with a 4-7 overall record following a pair of losses to Iowa City Regina Monday in Kalona by 10-4 and 8-6 scores. This season, the Hawks are hitting .342 as a team with a .446OBP and .495 with 90 runs scored on 96 hits, 35 walks and 57 strikeouts. Individually, three Hawks are at .400 or better, Dakota Mitchell, Sophie Miller and Gabi Robertson, with Mitchell leading at a .515 average, 20 runs scored and 17 total hits. Miller has a team high 15 runs driven in. In the circle, Kadence Grout and Alena Snider have combined for a 4-7 record and 5.78ERA, with opponent hitting .360 on 104 hits, 52 earned runs, 21 walks and 38 strikeouts.
Mount Vernon is 15-4 this season after suffering a sweep at the hands of Clear Creek Amana last night 8-4 and 6-3. The Mustangs are ranked No.4 in Class 3A in the latest poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. They hit .333 as a group with a .400OBP and .532 slug. They feature a pair of players over .400 with Hayden Gookin and Oliva Haverback. Hayden Gookin leads with a .460 average, both players have a team best 23 hits, Hayden Gookin leads the Mustangs with 19RBI and Addison Gookin has scored a team best 16 times. In the circle, Haverback and Hayden Gookin also lead, combining on a 15-4 record across more than 110 innings with a .139 opponent average with 59 hits, nine earned runs, 17 walks and 158Ks. The ‘Stangs have won eight straight in the series with the Hawks including a 10-1 final last year. Mid-Prairie’s last win over Mount Vernon came in 2015. Action starts tonight at 7p.m. at Mount Vernon High School.
