The Washington Demon baseball team won their first road game of the season last night by defeating Keokuk 15-11 in Game Two of a doubleheader. Washington scored a run in the first inning to take the initial lead, but Keokuk would match it in the second.

The Chiefs would go in front after a five-run fourth inning that included a grand slam by junior Blake Chase. But the Demons would have quite an answer ready in the next half inning.

Washington scored 11 times in the top of the fifth on nine hits, with base hits by senior Caleb Zieglowsky and junior Conner Leyden driving in runs early on before junior Mason Morgan came up with a two-run single to make it a one-run game.

Freshman Blayze Richardson smoked a two-run double to put the Demons ahead 7-6, then sophomore Kael Williams cranked a two-run double of his own to pad the lead. Zieglowsky would deliver the final blow of the big inning, cranking a three-run home run to left field to put Washington ahead 12-6.

Keokuk would nearly rally, scoring five times in the sixth to get back within one. But the Demons picked up three insurance runs in the top of the seventh and got three outs without incident in the bottom half.

Zieglowsky ended up with three total hits and five runs batted in to lead the Washington lineup. Richardson and Williams each had two hits and scored three runs, while Morgan and fellow junior Cole Vetter each scored once as part of two-hit games. Leyden added two knocks as Washington improves to 3-12 overall and 2-8 in the Southeast Conference.

The Demons dropped Game One at Keokuk last night 7-2. The Chiefs scored twice each in the third and fourth innings to take the lead, then added three more runs in the fifth to seize control.

Washington scored twice in the sixth inning and loaded the bases in the seventh but could not come all the way back. Still, the Demons are in position for their first conference series victory of the season when they next play Thursday and host Keokuk in the rubber game.
