Sigourney softball rolled past their rivals from Keota 17-0 last night on the road. Already having grabbed the lead with three runs in the first inning, the Savages scored five times in the fourth and eight times in the fifth to end the game early.

As part of a night where Sigourney piled up 17 hits, junior Josephine Moore had two of the loudest by swatting a pair of home runs and finishing with three runs batted in. Moore scored three total runs, as did senior Amiya Smallwood in the middle of a night where she had three hits and two RBI.

Erin Dawson also drove in a pair on three hits, one of which was a double. Fellow senior Ava Fineran added three knocks and two RBI, while junior Ava Fisch came up with two hits and scored a run for the Savages.

Sigourney, ranked third in the state in Class 1A, responded to a 1-0 loss they suffered to eighth-ranked Collins-Maxwell on Saturday at the Oskaloosa Tournament. The game was a brilliant pitchers’ duel between Savage senior Carly Goodwin and the Spartans’ Erica Hogue, with the only run coming in the seventh to give Collins-Maxwell the walk-off win.

Goodwin still allowed only three hits and racked up 14 strikeouts in six-and-a-third innings. The Savages are now 14-5 overall, including an 11-1 record in the South Iowa Cedar League.

Meanwhile, yesterday’s loss drops Keota to 1-13, including a 1-10 mark in conference play. The Eagles are off until they face Belle Plaine on Friday, while Sigourney is back in action tomorrow night against English Valleys.
