The Columbus Wildcats defeated the WACO Warriors in softball last night 19-7. Columbus scored twice in the top of the first inning to take the initial lead, but WACO put up four runs in the bottom of the first to go in front.

The Wildcats scored five runs in the top of the second to reclaim a 7-4 lead, but the Warriors had three runs of their own ready in the bottom half to tie things up. Columbus would finally seize control by scoring 12 times in the third inning, and keeping WACO scoreless in the frame allowed them to end the game early.

The Wildcats were coming off a tough 7-4 loss the night before to Central Lee. Columbus scored once in the first and twice in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead, but six runs in the sixth by the Hawks would be the difference.

The Wildcats are now 5-17, including a 3-7 record in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference. Meanwhile, WACO is still searching for its first win of 2024. While Columbus next plays tomorrow night against Louisa-Muscatine, the Warriors return to the field tomorrow against Winfield-Mount Union.
