The Highland Huskies knocked off Wapello in both baseball and softball last night. Highland softball needed only one run in the third inning and two in the sixth to defeat Wapello, as the Huskies blanked the defending conference-champion Arrows 3-0 for their 10th win in the last 15 games.

Junior Lilly Barre hit a home run for Highland and led the lineup with two hits and two runs batted in. Sophomore Makenzie Davis and eighth-grader Kamryn Fink each had a hit and scored a run for the Huskies, but the biggest star was senior Grace Prybil, who pitched a complete-game shutout and picked up five strikeouts.

The Huskies’ victory over Wapello made it back-to-back nights with a win, as they beat Mediapolis 10-0 in five innings Wednesday. Highland wasted no time seizing control, scoring three runs in the first and four more in the second. Fink had a big game at the plate with a team-high three hits, including a double, as well as a RBI and two runs scored.

Sarah Burton also scored twice for the Huskies, while fellow senior Courtney Chalupa and eighth-grader Maiya Singbeil each had two hits, one run scored and another driven in. Highland softball is now 12-7 overall, including a 9-3 record in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.

Husky baseball bounced back from an early 2-0 deficit Wednesday by scoring three runs in the second, but Mediapolis tied the game in the third and used six runs in the fourth to take command on their way to a 14-3 win that took just six frames.

Ryker Miller blasted a homer, while fellow junior Will Dunbar cranked a double as part of a two-hit game, but it was not enough to bring Highland back. Fortunately, they had all the right answers against Wapello the following night.

While junior Colton Sypherd pitched a dominant complete-game shutout, the Huskies scored twice in the third and three times in the fifth on their way to a 6-0 victory. Sypherd gave up five hits and two walks while racking up nine strikeouts.

Junior Logan McFarland had three hits and scored two runs to lead the lineup, while Dunbar and freshman Landon Roling came up with a hit and two RBI each. Freshman Hunter Seibel also scored twice as Highland improves to 7-2 in the Super Conference North and 9-11 overall.
