Winfield-Mount Union softball knocked off WACO 9-2 last night. The Wolves broke a scoreless tie with a run in the third inning and three runs in the fourth. Two more runs in the fifth and three in the sixth would more than match the single tallies in each inning by the Warriors.

Senior Makiah Lower had three hits, including a double, and one run batted in to lead the WMU lineup. Sophomore Katie Miller added two hits and two RBI while also scoring once, while junior Josie Nelson also hit a double and drove in one.

Freshman Natalie Wagler hit a triple and scored a run for WACO, but they could not otherwise solve Lower, who pitched a complete game and gave up no earned runs on three hits with eight strikeouts to keep the Warriors winless still this season.

The win was a bounce-back from a 20-1 loss the Wolves suffered against West Burlington Notre Dame on Wednesday. Eight runs in each of the first two innings put the Falcons in charge on their way to winning after three frames.

Senior Jessi Renken scored and sophomore Quin Smith drove in the only run of the night for Winfield-Mount Union, which currently sits at 4-8 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and 5-14 overall.

Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus baseball also came up just short to West Burlington Wednesday. The Wolves fell behind 6-0 but rallied to tie the game. Two runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh forced extras, but the Falcons scored the only run in the eighth and would win it 7-6.

Junior Riley Kaalberg hit a home run for WMU/Columbus and had two hits, two runs scored and three runs batted in. Sophomore Trevor Phillips also picked up a pair of RBI while stroking a double, while senior Cole Milks had two hits, one run scored and another driven in.

Senior Cael Phillips and junior Kohbly Newsom each added a hit and scored once as the Wolves drop to 5-9. Both teams from WMU are back in action tonight against Louisa-Muscatine.
