KCII News spoke with U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley about the Unaccompanied Children program to learn more, and find out why Grassley feels it should be overturned, “Eighty-five thousand children, we don’t know where they are. We wrote several months ago that this rule that they were putting out on unaccompanied children was not in the best interest of the kids. We hope that we can get it stopped in the United States Senate, with a vote that I hope we can get enough votes to get it passed. We have forty-six co-sponsors on this resolution, and we have to get fifty-one votes to get it passed.” Migrant children who enter the U.S. illegally without an adult are detained and placed in the Unaccompanied Children (UC) program, run by the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). HHS’s UC program is intended to reunify unaccompanied migrant children with family members or other trusted adult.
