A conference championship is on the line for Washington Demon softball as they start a series with Burlington by hosting a doubleheader tonight that you can hear on KCII.

Washington has had a stellar 2024 season to this point. The ninth-ranked team in the state in Class 3A has a 21-7 record overall, including an 11-1 mark in the Southeast Conference, thanks largely to a lineup that has scored 250 runs.

Two all-state hitters a season ago in sophomore Leighton Salazar and junior Ella Greiner have been just as good this summer, each posting batting averages of over. 500 and putting up 26 runs batted in.

Salazar has piled up 55 hits and scored 45 runs while hitting .545, all on pace to break the school records she set in 2023. Meanwhile, Greiner is batting an even .500 with six doubles, two home runs and 24 runs scored.

Alyvia Anderson has raised her game to an all-state level at the plate, hitting .394 with eight doubles, two homers and a team-high 32 RBI for the Demons. Fellow junior Bella Salazar is batting .352 with 31 driven in, joining Anderson near the top of Class 3A in RBI.

Mix in four other players who are hitting over .300, and you have a recipe for an offense that averages just under nine runs per game. Washington pitching has also been stout, with Bella Salazar, junior Halle Cuddeback and freshman Colbie Greiner combining to put up an earned-run average of just under two-and-a-half.

The Demons will need their best in every facet of the game to take down Burlington, the defending champions of the Southeast Conference. The Greyhounds are 15-4-1 behind senior pitcher Saydee Plummer’s minuscule 0.72 ERA.

Lillian Hand’s .419 average and fellow freshman Kylee Hill’s four home runs have also been big parts of Burlington also winning 11 of their 12 conference games to this point.

Washington has won two of its last three games against the Greyhounds after losing nine of the previous 10 in the series. If the Demons take this season’s three-game set, they’ll win a conference title in softball for the first time since 2018.
