The Washington Demons were swept in a doubleheader with Burlington softball yesterday as they battled for first place in the Southeast Conference. Washington lost the ultimate pitcher’s duel in Game One, as a single run in the fourth inning would be the difference for Burlington in a 1-0 win.

Despite the defeat, junior pitcher Bella Salazar was brilliant in the circle for the Demons, allowing only three hits and three walks while throwing all seven innings.

Game Two was scoreless until the fourth, when freshman Ava Fawcett’s three-run home run provided the signature blow for what would be a six-run inning for the Greyhounds.

Burlington went on to win 11-0, holding Washington to only two hits for a second straight game and recording just the second shutout of the Demons this season. Washington, coming in ranked ninth in the state in Class 3A, has now lost five straight to fall to 21-9 overall and 11-3 in the Southeast Conference.

Demon baseball would not have better luck against Burlington in their doubleheader. Game One went back and forth, with Washington taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning but falling behind 4-3 by the end of the second.

The Demons would be within a run going into the final frame, but they couldn’t get the tying run across by then, and two more runs in the seventh would give the Greyhounds a 7-4 victory.

Burlington got a run right away in Game Two and scored three times in the third inning to seize control. The Greyhounds would go on to win 10-0 after six frames, dropping Washington to 3-9 in conference play and 4-15 in total.
