Sigourney Savage baseball survived a close call with Iowa Valley last night by a final score of 6-5. Sigourney fell behind 2-1 in the fourth inning and would briefly tie the game before scoring twice in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.

But Iowa Valley put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 5. Fortunately, the Savages came back in the bottom half and would produce a walk-off winner.

Sigourney, now ranked 10th in the state in Class 1A, uses the thrilling win to improve to 16-2 overall, including finishing their season in the South Iowa Cedar League with a 13-1 record.

Savage softball would score twice in the first and once in the second to grab the early lead on Iowa Valley and never relinquish, going on to win 7-0. Senior pitcher Carly Goodwin was again dominant in the circle, giving up just two hits and one walk while putting up 16 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout.

Goodwin added three hits and three runs batted in to lead the Sigourney lineup, while junior Ava Fisch smoked a triple on her way to two RBI and scoring three runs.

The Savages were coming off a pair of convincing wins in a Saturday doubleheader at Moravia. Sigourney took Game One 14-0 before finishing off a 12-0 victory in Game Two that only took four frames.

Goodwin had a team-high four hits and scored two runs in Game One, while junior Dani Aller hit both a double and triple on her way to three total hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Senior Amiya Smallwood came up with a triple as part of a two-hit game and drove in four while scoring twice.

Junior Ava Fisch added three base hits and senior Erin Dawson had a pair of knocks as each player scored a run, while Goodwin threw a perfect game and racked up another 16 strikeouts.

Jospehine Moore not only pitched for the Savages in Game Two, hurling a perfect four frames and picking up six punch-outs, but the junior also hit her seventh home run of the season and had two RBI as part of a two-hit game.

Aller had two hits, two runs scored and another two driven in, while senior Ava Fineran and eighth-grader Ella Burns each added a pair of runs batted in and eighth-grader Brynn Clarahan scored three times.

Sigourney, the fifth-ranked team in Class 1A, is now 18-6 and has won five straight, including winning a fourth straight conference championship. While Savage softball is off until Friday night against Albia, baseball plays again tonight against Highland.
