Back in April, Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh brought KCII up to speed on Vista Park, a new recreation area in the works at the SouthTown Development.

“If somebody were to go out there right now, they’d see DeLong Construction and CJ Moyna [& Sons] and other contractors out there laying the foundation for a two-plus acre dog park, a public restroom facility that’s ADA compliant,” he said. “They’d see the beginnings of a Naturescape Park and a splash pad, so we’re excited about what 2024 looks like as we kick off a very aggressive park project.”

Just this week, additional progress on the space was shared via social media. Plumbing has been completed on the splash pad, with water features to be delivered and installed in August. Just beyond the way, initial construction on the playground has finished as well. The fenced-in dog park has been seeded, and the precast floor for the restroom facility is being set this week.

While this work continues, the Black Locust Disc Golf Course is open to the public, as is the North Ridge Trail. The tentative completion date for the SouthTown Recreation Area is late August.
