While postseason openers have already been announced for 1A baseball, the Highland Huskies still have plenty to play for. A 7-2 record in the Super Conference has Highland in the mix for a regular season title with three straight conference opponents still waiting. Winfield-Mt. Union/Columbus is the first, as they come to town looking for the season sweep.

Despite the solid conference record, Highland entered the week below .500 overall. They did score a wild win in New London Monday to improve to 10-11. In a game that took 10 innings to find a winner, Athlete of the Week William Dunbar hit one out of the park, and accounted for six of the Huskies’ 13 runs. Bryce Hazelett struck out five in five innings on the mound, but a Highland defense that committed 7 errors didn’t do him many favors. Highland has team fielding percentage of .874 behind an ERA of 5.58. Eleven different pitchers have made multiple appearances on the mound, combining for 116 strikeouts to 104 walks. At the plate, Dunbar, Ryker Miller, Logan McFarland, and Landon Roling each have at least 10 hits and 10 RBIs. Highland averages just under 6 runs per game with a .247 team average. As of yesterday, the Huskies sat just a half game behind Hillcrest Academy in the Super Conference North.

They’ll look to at least hold their position tonight against the Wolves. WMU/Columbus bested the Huskies earlier this month on the KCII3 Stream and come to Riverside winners of their most recent match with Wapello. The Wolves celebrated their two seniors, and then saw them dominate on the diamond in an 11-1 victory. Cole Milks had a game-high 4 knocked in and was perfect at the plate, while Cael Phillips fanned four in six innings. Riley Kaalberg and Trevor Phillips join Milks in hitting above .370, boosting the team average to .286. While they are scoring around 5 runs per game, WMU holds the statistical advantage in the field and on the mound. Using nine pitchers of their own, the Wolves have an ERA of 4.02. Most of that work has fallen to Trevor and Cael Phillips.

In their last four matchups, WMU and Highland have each won a pair. Listen to the rubber match tonight on the KCII3 Stream with pregame coverage at 5 p.m. and first pitch between the Huskies and Wolves at 5:30.
