fireworks

Iowans who plan on celebrating the Fourth of July with some of their own fireworks are advised of the legal dates and times to do so.

According to Iowa law, fireworks are permitted from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 1-8. These hours are extended to 11 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, Saturday, July 6, and Sunday, July 7. Residents should note that respective city ordinances may differ from the schedule set by the State, including but not limited to a restriction or complete ban on fireworks use in city limits.

As the holiday means a busy time for local law enforcement, Iowans should be aware of what constitutes an emergency. Neighbors setting off fireworks outside of normal hours, firework debris landing in your yard, and/or fireworks upsetting pets do not warrant an emergency or a 911 call. Non-emergencies can be reported in Washington County at 319-653-2107.
