The Washington Demon baseball team came up just short in a 2-1 pitcher’s duel with conference rival Fairfield. The game was actually partially started back on June 13th, when Fairfield scored a run in the first inning but Washington stranded the bases loaded before torrential rain moved in to pause the action.

When the game resumed Tuesday night, the Demons were ready to strike and tied the game in the third inning when sophomore Kael Williams reached with a single and came around to score on a base hit by senior Luke Beenblossom.

Junior pitcher Conner Leyden would keep Washington tied with the Trojans all the way until junior Luke Konczal drove in Ethan Bisgard to give Fairfield a walk-off win in the seventh.

Leyden was brilliant on the bump for the Demons, allowing no earned runs on four hits and four walks in five-and-two thirds innings. Williams ended up with a team-high three hits for Washington, while Leyden and Beenblossom each came up with a pair of base hits.

The loss drops the Demons to 4-19, including finishing Southeast Conference play with a 3-12 record. Washington next plays Monday at Davis County.
