Both Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus and Keota are moving on in the baseball playoffs after first-round victories Saturday. WMU/Columbus defeated Louisa-Muscatine 4-1 in Class 2A District 10, scoring right away in the first inning to take the initial lead and getting two key insurance runs in the sixth while leading 2-1.

The star of the night for the Wolves was sophomore pitcher Trevor Philips, allowing a single hit and working around five walks allowed to give up just one run in six innings while also picking up 10 strikeouts. Sophomore Kason Dopler pitched the final inning and earned the save.

Kohlby Newsom had team highs of two hits and two runs scored for Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus, while Phillips added two hits, a run scored and one run batted in.

The lone hit of the game for senior Cole Milks was a double, and he also had one RBI as WMU/Columbus improves to 9-11. The Wolves next play tomorrow night against Anamosa in the 2A District 10 semifinals.

Keota also earned a 4-1 victory over Danville in Class 1A District 11, breaking a scoreless tie with two runs in the home half of the third and scoring once more each in the fourth and fifth frames.

From there, senior Cole Kindred would dominate for the Eagles on the mound, giving up a single run on three hits in five innings and striking out seven. Eighth-grader Blake Baker got the save by pitching the final two innings and would pick up three Ks.

Senior Tanner Waterhouse led the Keota lineup with two hits and also had one run scored and one RBI. Baker drove in a pair on one hit, while freshman Brennan McGuire added a knock and a run scored as the Eagles move to 10-10. Keota will now Moravia tomorrow evening in the District 11 semis.
