A Fairfield man was arrested and charged over the weekend following an attack on a Fairfield Police Officer.
At approximately 10:46 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, an officer on patrol observed a female subject who he knew to have an active warrant for her arrest. The officer made contact with the female in the 300 block of West Kirkwood Avenue when he was attacked by a male subject. He approached the officer from behind and struck him with a baseball bat, at which point a struggle ensued.
The man was eventually subdued and identified as 75-year-old Larry Allen Bell. He was taken into custody and charged with assault on a peace officer while displaying a weapon, going armed with intent, interference with official acts while displaying a weapon, and willful injury, each a class D felony.
Bell was transported to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 17. The officer who was attacked was taken to the Jefferson County Health Center where he was treated and released.
