Sigourney baseball hosted its second playoff game in a row last night, welcoming a scrappy Lone Tree team. Despite tossing a combined no-hitter, the Savages would need some late fireworks to survive the Lions 6-4.

In his seventh start on the mound, Caden Clarahan found himself in a few early jams but was able to lean on an overpowering fastball to keep the Lions scoreless through two innings. His counterpart, Owen Eden did much of the same for Lone Tree, stranding two savages in the first and another in the second.

The Lions jumped to a 1-0 lead in the third after Eden reached on a dropped-third strike. The freshman would later cross the plate on a wild pitch putting some pressure on the home team. It would be the only run allowed by Caden Clarahan, who finished with 11 strikeouts in five frames.

Fitting with the early theme of the game, Sigourney plated two runs off no hits in the fourth to take the lead. While the elder Clarahan continued to frustrate Lion hitters, it would be Chase Clarahan to provide the biggest hit of the contest. Not only did the freshman record his first-career home run in the fifth, but the bases were full of Savages. The grand slam put Sigourney up by five, with plenty of drama still to come.

After the big hit, the Savages looked to Chase Clarahan for the final six outs on the mound. Clarahan made quick work of the Lions in the sixth, but experienced location issues in the seventh. Lone Tree plated three in the last inning thanks to four walks and a hit batter. With the potential-tying run on second, Brady Clark handled a two-out grounder to send Sigourney to the District Championship.

At season’s end, Lone Tree says goodbye to seniors Ethan Bockelman, Harry Brenneman, and Dominic Graap. Sigourney eyes their next opponent in BGM. The two square off Saturday night with the winner one game from the State Tournament.
