This season has been another spectacular one for Sigourney Savage softball. Another conference championship has been followed by a second straight trip to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union state tournament.

But now, having reached the season’s final game for the first time ever, sixth-ranked Sigourney has a chance to take home the biggest prize in the sport when they take on number-one Martensdale-St Marys in the Class 1A state championship game tonight on KCII.

The Savages have won 11 of their last 12 games to not only get to state for the third time in the last four years, but they’ve toppled third-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s and number-seven Southeast Warren earlier this week to find themselves on the state’s biggest stage.

Senior pitcher Carly Goodwin, the 2023-2024 Gatorade Player of the Year for Iowa high school softball, can put her stamp on one of the program’s greatest careers by adding a title to her three all-state selections.

Goodwin has gone 23-2 with a minuscule 0.39 earned-run average and over 350 strikeouts this summer, adding to her career totals of 90 wins, a 0.63 ERA and over 1,300 K’s.

It’s also been a career-best season with the bat for Goodwin, who has a .495 average, 14 doubles, six home runs and 40 runs batted in. Junior Josephine Moore hit her 11th homer of the season in the state semifinals and also has 40 RBI while batting better than .400.

Mix in great production from junior Ava Fisch in the lead-off spot and some clutch hitting of late from senior Erin Dawson, and you can see why Sigourney head coach Shelly Streigle tells KCII Sports that this team is ready to make some history.

“This team is capable from top to bottom,” Streigle says. “I know [that] Carly, everybody looks at her, but I’m telling you, I expect great plays out of every one of [the players] from the top to the bottom, and I think, over the last couple of weeks, every single one of them has stepped up and done that and will continue to do that.”

The Savages will be facing a Martensdale-St Marys team that was the state runner-up in 2023 and had gone 30-6 this season behind the all-state talents of junior Sydney Bears and seniors Campbell and Brynnly German, who have combined for 99 RBI and 110 runs scored.

Sigourney softball takes on the Blue Devils in the Class 1A softball state championship game this evening, and you can hear all the action on all KCII signals and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII apps, starting with the Roder Epoxy Pregame Show at 7 o’clock.
