We’re counting down the top 10 sports stories at Washington High School in the 2023-2024 academic year at KCII. At number 10 is softball player Leighton Salazar capturing another school record.

Salazar set a new single-season program best with 36 stolen bases this summer, breaking Lucy Libe’s previous record set back in 2008. It’s the fourth single-season school record that Salazar now owns, breaking Washington records for hits, batting average and runs scored as a freshman in 2023.

Salazar, who now owns 88 stolen bases total in her career, just picked up her second straight all-state selection in Class 3A from the Iowa Girls Coaches Association, receiving second team honors and a first-team All-Southeast Conference nod.

The sophomore was also an all-district selection after she led the Demons with a .524 batting average and scored a team-high 54 runs, propelling Washington to a second straight season with 24 wins.
