At KCII, we’re continuing to count down the top 10 sports stories at area high schools in the 2023-2024 academic year. At number eight is the Winfield-Mount Union boys’ golf team making the state tournament.

With a team victory at their Class 1A district tournament at Heritage Oaks Golf & Country Club in Wapello in May, WMU punched its ticket to state golf as a team for the first time since 2017.

It was part of a spectacular spring for the Wolves where they won seven events as a team and would go on to finish tied for sixth at the Class 1A championships in Ames.

Senior Carter Loyd capped his career by shooting an eight-over-par 79 that had him tied for 15th on the individual leaderboard at state and was only four strokes away from winning a medal.

Loyd was ranked top 20 in the state by season’s end and was the lowest scoring player on the team for Winfield-Mount Union, but freshmen Justin Knipfer and Cody Milks and sophomores Konner Kinneberg, Max Edwards and Grant Anderson all had average 18-hole scores of 98 or lower, helping the Wolves finish fourth in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.

Be listening over the next two weeks as the countdown of KCII’s Top 10 Area Sports Stories from the last year continues, and find the stories as their spot on the countdown is revealed at KCIIradio.com.
