Fun for a good cause is coming to Mount Pleasant Friday. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office welcomes the community to their fundraiser golf tournament and silent auction at the Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club. Last year was the first year for the event. Henry County Sheriff Rich McNamee tells KCII News that the proceeds from the first year event went to the K9 Unit at the Sheriff’s Office. This year, proceeds will be used for their Reserve Deputy Program. McNamee spoke about the role of the Reserve Deputy.

McNamee said, “We currently have eight on our Reserve Deputy Unit, we can have up to 15. For a Reserve Deputy in the state of Iowa, when they are on duty they are on duty, when they are off duty they are off duty. Reserve Deputies are trained just like a Deputy Sheriff. They serve as volunteers. They get a dollar a year so they are covered under the work comp insurance policy. We have some Reserve Deputies that meet the minimum and some that work over 1,000 hours per year. They gear and equipment are paid for by the Reserve Deputy Force, that’s where these proceeds will go. When we hire a new Deputy, we have training, their uniform, their gear, like a duty belt and firearm, all those things together you’re talking several thousand dollars. With this event we can maybe put more Reserve Deputies on and keep the ones we have. The Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Henry County get a large reward for a little investment. They are out right alongside me and my Deputies, out there doing the job!”

The golf tournament is a team event and begins at 8a.m. Teams will play 18 holes, with lunch provided and drawings for door prizes. The silent auction features both golf related and non-golf items.
