After another spectacular season to cap off a brilliant career, a Washington Demon golfer received one of the highest honors in the state. Senior Roman Roth was named the Class 3A Co-Player of the Year by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association.

One year after winning the individual Class 3A state championship, Roth finished third at state by shooting a one-under-par 71 at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames in May.

It was part of a senior season where Roth had seven victories and 12 total rounds under par. That included winning individual Southeast Conference and sectional titles, as well as becoming just the 16th player in Iowa High School Athletic Association history to win multiple state medals.

Roth was one of the leaders of a Washington team that reached the state championships in boys’ golf for a second time in the last three years and won conference, sectional and district crowns along the way, finishing worse than first only four times and taking fifth in Class 3A.

Roth also earned an invitation to a U.S. Open qualifying tournament this past spring. He splits Player of the Year honors in 3A with Evan Smith of Knoxville and Isaiah Zoske of Solon.
