The Sigourney Savages had a solid start to the volleyball season by taking two out of three matches at the WACO Tournament Monday in Wayland.

Despite losing both sets to Burlington Notre Dame, Sigourney kept it close with the perennial power with final scores of 23-21 and 21-18. From there, the Savages found their groove.

After dropping the first set 21-18 to the Columbus Wildcats, Sigourney won the next two, 21-16 and 21-8, to take the match, and they would cruise to a straight-sets victory over Louisa-Muscatine as well.

Sophomore Bailey Gretter led the Savages’ attack with 12 total kills across all three games but also did a little bit of everything, handing out 10 assists while also compiling four serving aces and 19 digs.

Middle blocker Reagan Clarahan had nine kills and a blocked shot on the night, while outside hitter Josephine Moore finished with six kills, four aces and 23 digs and fellow senior McKinley Chittick put up eight kills, two aces and nine digs. Senior setter Taylor Rozenboom added 12 digs and an ace while also handing out 20 assists.

The WACO Warriors were beaten in two of the three matches they played while hosting their annual season-opening tournament. After starting the night by winning both sets against Centerville, 21-12 and 21-16, WACO fell in straight sets to Van Buren County, 21-14 and 21-19.

The Warriors bounced back from losing the first set 21-1 to Pekin to win the second 21-15, but they dropped the decisive third set 15-10 to lose the match. In addition to the Sigourney loss, Columbus lost in straight sets to Burlington Notre Dame, 21-5 and 21-13.

Meanwhile, the Highland Huskies suffered a straight-sets loss at Belle Plaine last night. After dropping the first set 25-13, the Huskies kept things close in the second frame but would still take a 25-23 defeat.
