It was a tough start to the season Friday for the Sigourney-Keota football team as they fell in their 2024 season opener at home to top five in Class 2A Prairie City Monroe 54-14. PCM took command early with a pair of first period touchdowns to lead 14-0 after one. The Cobras chopped the lead in half to start the second as Isaac Bruns scored the Snakes first TD of the year on a 17-yard run to make it 14-7. However, PCM would post the next 20 to take a 34-7 lead into the locker room. The Mustangs enacted the running clock with two third quarter touchdowns to lead 47-7 going to the fourth. Each team found the end zone once in the final frame with the Cobras touchdown coming through the air when Jacob Libe connected with Ayden Galindo on a 55 yard scoring strike.

PCM outgained SK 412-262 in total, including 276-193 on the ground and 136 to 69 through the air. Mustang quarterback Gavin VanGorp was three of five through the air for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns and 88 yards went to Riley Graber. Adrien Robbins had 154 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. Trenner VanDyke led with 12 tackles. For the Cobras, Bruns led with 20 carries 84 rush yards and a touchdown. Libe had 55 pass yards, all on his scoring completion to Gallindo, who also led with the yards from that one catch. Jace Chalupa led the defensive with five tackles. PCM is 1-0 and hosts Pella Christian Friday, SK is 0-1 with a home game against Cardinal this week.
