The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves got the volleyball season started by defeating Keokuk in straight sets Thursday night. WMU won a nip-and-tuck first set 25-23 before seizing control with a 25-14 victory in the second frame. While the Chiefs pushed them hard, the Wolves finished off the victory by claiming the third set 25-22.
Outside hitter Kellee Milks led Winfield-Mount Union with 11 kills and five serving aces, while fellow junior Quin Smith added six kills and four aces and freshman Kynlee Buffington added another seven kills to the attack.
Junior setter Madison Kellogg had a great all-around night for WMU, finishing with four kills, 18 assists and two aces. Junior Kaelyn Townsley added three kills, five assists, an ace and seven digs.
Senior libero Pacey Schlee led the Wolves with 14 digs, while senior Josie Nelson had 11 digs and two aces to help Winfield-Mount Union start the season 1-0. WMU will next play tomorrow when they have their first conference match against Louisa-Muscatine.
