The Columbus Wildcats had the best showing among local cross country teams yesterday at the Sigourney Invitational. The Columbus boys won their second straight team competition with a score of 21 points, more than 45 less than second-place North Mahaska, while the Wildcat girls were fourth as a team.

Ty Muniz nearly added an individual win to Columbus’ team victory, as the senior was second in the boys’ race with a time of 17 minutes 20 seconds.

Ryan Villa took fifth overall by clocking in at 18 minutes 34 seconds, with fellow sophomore Cade Storm only two seconds and one spot behind him, while freshman Elias Gonzalez Bravo finished ninth in 19:04.

Senior Bryan Tlatenchi added a 14th-place time, while sophomore Juan Alcala and freshman Victor Tovar also ran top-20 times to round out the scoring for the Wildcats. On the girls’ side, junior Isabel Rendon was 10th by crossing the finish line of 22:37.

The host Sigourney Savages were led by Troy Klett’s third-place time of 18:21, while fellow junior Addison Yates took bronze in the girls’ race as well in 21:28. Junior Ellie Yates also took seventh for Sigourney in 22:04, while freshman Brynn Clarahan was ninth for the Savages in 22:37.

WACO’s best finish came from freshman Josie Dykstra, who was sixth in the girls’ race in 21:54, while junior Tristan Luitjens just missed out on the top 20 for the Warrior boys.

Senior Vivian Zaruba led Lone Tree by finishing 13th, while freshman Addyson Eiben and junior Ava Christofferson also had top-20 times for the Lion girls and sophomore Brock Nebergall led the boys by placing 13th as well

Junior Chase Hickenbottom’s time of just under 24:19 led the Highland boys, while senior Olivia Edwards clocked in at just over 32 minutes for the Husky girls. Freshman Hunter Grandstaff represented Keota and put up a time of just over 26-and-a-half minutes.
