The Highland Huskies moved on in this year’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference Volleyball Tournament after winning all but one of their pool-play matches Thursday night in Mediapolis.

While Highland did lose in straight sets to the hosting Bulldogs, the Huskies otherwise swept the competition, including beating the Columbus Wildcats 21-19 and 21-15; defeating the WACO Warriors 21-16 and 21-13; and knocking off New London 21-15 and 21-16.

Senior Adeline Krotz led the Huskies with a total of 23 kills for the night and also had three blocked shots and four serving aces. Sophomore Hailey Brun finished the evening with 12 kills, an ace and 14 digs, while junior Brenna Hazelett added seven kills and three blocks.

Senior setter Laney Skelton not only handed out 47 assists but also had six kills, 16 digs and two aces as Highland improves to 16-9 and advances to the bracket stage of this year’s Super Conference Tournament this weekend at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, starting with the quarterfinals against Wapello.

While they did fall to both the Huskies and Mepo in straight sets, Columbus did sweep WACO 21-12 and 21-8 before doing the same to New London, 21-11 and 21-18.

The junior class again led the way for the Wildcats, with Kennedy Woepking putting up a team-high 13 kills on the night as well as 26 digs. Audrey Hoback finished with 11 kills, 22 digs and five serving aces, while Jessica Del Rio also had 11 kills and came up with eight digs, three aces and a blocked shot.

Aracely Garza added eight kills and led Columbus with 27 digs and eight aces. Setter Daniela Diaz not only dished out 47 assists but also had six kills, 16 digs and two aces as the ‘Cats move to 8-14. In addition to the Highland and Columbus losses, WACO was beaten by Mediapolis in straight sets, dropping their record to 5-14.
